Part 3 of the Beginners Sea Kayak Course is a 6-hour sea kayak trip that puts it all together.
It’s time to develop the big picture, to work on being Captain of our ship, to balance the big three – People, Environment and Equipment continually during our journey. We want a holistic view of the environment we are operating in. Good judgment is aided by pro-active forecasting, predicting and planning.
Good boating skills allow you to react effectively through observing, understanding and adjusting technique and position to the environment. You will begin to understand ‘4 B’s of boat control’: Body, Boat, Blade and Brain.
So, the essence of safe and effective boating is good seamanship. The Captain of her ship (kayak) chooses the right route on the day, within defined goals and well within the groups’ skill set, in the full range of possible conditions and with due regard for the equipment limitations.
This day is about decision making, seamanship and planning. We will be doing a 4-hour sea kayak trip after studying the various environmental conditions, the skills and size of the group on the day. A normal way to start any sea kayak journey whether it is a short trip or an extended expedition. They are all journeys of discovery in the eyes of a sea kayaker.
So the things we will know to take into account are:
The weather forecast, the tidal flow (high and low tide times and heights), wind direction and speed, water temperature.
The goals for the day will need to be achievable so are worked out with the environmental information in our grasp.
Safety & Personal Responsibility is the most important element of seamanship and it will be constantly appraised during the day: We will be responsible, first to ourselves, then to others.
Risk factors: Awareness of realistic dangers, individual fears and other possible problems.
We are captains of our ship, legally, morally and effectively. The Captain of the ship balances environmental, personal and equipment factors as good seamanship.
Today we put it all together in a sea kayak journey of discovery..
