This is Part 1 of the Sea Kayak Competency Certificate.
Paddling a sea kayak is easy to learn – perhaps too easy!
In skilled hands sea kayaks are extraordinarily seaworthy craft, however, a novice can find the sea kayak difficult to control in waves or windy conditions.
You will find sea kayaking to be a much more relaxed and enjoyable activity after completion of this Basic Sea Kayak Control course.
To be a competent sea kayaker you need to know how to control your kayak in all weather conditions. To do that you will need to understand how the kayak is effected by the eternal and changeable forces of wind, waves and currents.
This course will give you the fundamental knowledge and techniques to control your kayak in winds from all quarters up to force 4.
At the end of the day you will be able to:
• use the correct paddle techniques to execute the most effecicent & effective paddle strokes.
• understand which paddle strokes to use to keep your sea kayak on track when the wind is from in front & the wind is from astern.
• execute the forward paddle, forward sweep, back paddle, reverse sweep and draw strokes.
• By observing the ocean surface, assess wind speed and direction.
• Enter a kayak from deep water & from a beach.
The morning is spent learning the fundamentals of sea kayaking: the wind, weather, ocean currents, waves and tides, and how this all effects the sea kayak.
Understanding the elements of the sea kayak, how & why they work and the most effective way to control the kayak.
You will learn how to sequence your strokes for most effectiveness combining two or more techniques to make your kayak dance, choose the correct stroke to match the wind and sea conditions, make micro adjustments to counter the effect of winds, learn how to support yourself with your paddle while continuing to glide effortlessly over the ocean.
