May 06, 2019 – Tai Tam Bay sea kayaking in Hong Kong

Tai Tam Bay on a misty summer day.

Sea kayaking around Tai Tam Bay behind the seaside town of Stanley highlights these contrasts. Departing our Tai Tam Tuk base we are surrounded by small working sampans and a tiny cluster of waterfront village houses and family businesses. Even the abandoned pumping station that provided water to Hong Kong city in the early 1900’s. But it doesn’t take long (15 mins) before the shorelines on the eastern side are covered in multi-million dollar apartments and the moorings are full of multi-million dollar yachts.

The west bank is still untouched with old hamlets destroyed by the Japanese invasion in the 2nd world war still empty. Pill boxes on the shoreline as testament to the battles that happened here. Remote beaches only accessible by foot or boat just 3 kms from one of the most popular recreational beaches on Hong Kong Island. The contrasts never stop.

Another overcast and calm day - perfect sea kayaking weather in the UNESCO Global geopark.

Shelter Bay is the location of the UNESCO Global Geopark and as such is globally recognised for its unique features and significance. Sharp island is the edge of the mega volcano that created it. Our journey takes us around the island both above and under the water.

These photos attest to the beauty of the locality and how the mood changes  as you paddle through the inner islands of sheltered beaches and small villages to the more open and exposed coastal features at the eastern end of Sharp Island. A great introduction to sea kayaking and to a place recognised by the United nations as globally significant.

May 29 2019 Dog Island Sea Kayak trip_07

An overcast and windy day made for excitement and fun.

Dog Island is only a short distance from Sok Kwu Wan, but when you throw in 20 – 30 km winds and 1 meter high waves, you can expect some fun. The ladies and ladfrom the UK took it in their stride, laughing all the way. Great day. Great fun!
