Search for the white dolphin, Tai O & the Fan Lau Peninsula

Date: Sunday, October 18, 2020.   Hosted By: Dave.  Meeting Place: 10:00 AM, Tung Chung Carpark.

What to expect

This is an environmentally and historically unique sea kayak trip.
As the winds have swung to the north, the southern areas of Hong Kong have calmer sea conditions, so this is a great opportunity to explore the many unique features of western Lantau island….and see if we can spot the critically endangered Chinese White Dolphin (Indo Pacific Humpback Dolphin with Chinese characteristics!).
We depart Tung Chung at 10:00 am. The kayaks have to be transported from Sai Kung so we will be leaving there very early!

Our journey for the day is around 24 km but we will travel down the coast with the outgoing tide and then return with the incoming tide, so it will feel like 15kms.
Along the way, we will pass under the new (white elephant) Macau Bridge and into Tai O, heading towards our historical destination for lunch in the Ming Dynasty Fort on the Fan Lau Peninsula.

We will then return back to Tai O where we will leave the kayaks for the evening.
This is a fantastic journey taking in great villages, coastal scenery, islands, waterfalls and ancient Chinese historical monuments – and if we are very lucky, we may spot the elusive and critically endangered Chinese White Dolphin.

As always, normal club rules apply.
Sea Kayak Rental – if needed, $300.

What to bring.
Clothes to kayak in – wet shoes or trainers are a requirement.
Bring a light windproof shell to wear in the afternoon as it is getting cool.
A water bottle and a picnic lunch.
A winning attitude, a smile and a sense of adventure.

This is not your average sea kayak trip – which usually includes bringing your own food (see pic above), but it is the perfect beginners trip to build up some sea miles. *****Please note that you have to have gone through the basic sea kayaking course to join this event / know how to control a kayak. This is to make sure the day is enjoyable for everyone.

It seems lately, some of our more experienced members have been taking short sea kayak journeys and stopping at waterfront restaurant enjoy the local cuisine instead of self-catering. 
Well, Edith (Madame Edith to her friends!), our resident foodie wants to share this experience with other paddlers – so if you are a foodie and a budding sea kayaker, join a short but enjoyable paddle around Sharp Island via Yin Tim Tsai for “noodles at the church”.

This journey will take in the mangroves and salt pans of Yin Tim Tsai so, it also has a touch of culture and environmental education to boot! ;-).

What to bring.
Clothes to kayak in – wet shoes or trainers are a requirement.
Bring a light windproof shell to wear in the afternoon as it is getting cool.
A water bottle and a picnic lunch.
A winning attitude, a smile and a sense of adventure.

What to expect

A sea kayaker progresses to the next level when they can confidently stop themselves from capsizing in rough seas.
This is an essential skill for any sea kayaker who wishes to paddle in exposed waters.
The techniques for righting yourself before you capsize are simple to understand but, at first, need the training to execute. 
Today’s course will teach you the 4 main techniques/strokes for making sure you do not capsize.

1. The low brace (support) & the low brace turn (support and turn).
2. The high brace (support) & the high brace turn (hanging draw).
3. The sculling support & the sculling draw stroke.
4. Edging your sea kayak to make turns and counter winds.

Mastering these skills will give you a new sense of security and will open up new destinations and opportunities for sea kayaking in Hong Kong.
